Italy: TAP’s launch delayed

Due to the delay of the construction in the Italian section of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), gas from Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field will reach Europe no earlier than October 2020, Reuters reports citing the head of the Trans Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) consortium Saltuk Duzyol. A 1,850km long TANAP is designed for delivering Azerbaijani gas from Shah Deniz II field to Turkey via Georgia. TANAP will be linked to TAP on the border with Greece, which will help to supply Azerbaijani gas to Europe. “Supply of Azerbaijani gas to Europe can start no earlier than October 2020, as TAP construction operations may be completed only by that time”, Duzyol noted.

The project was expected to complete early in 2020. However the TAP consortium faced some technical challenges, as well as other non-technical problems which impacted the construction process”, Duzyol clarified.

If the pipeline is not commissioned by July 1, 2020, the TANAP consortium has a right to lodge financial claims against Azerbaijan.

“From the trade standpoint and following our gas supply agreements, we have a right to issue bills starting from July 1, 2020”, ‘Vesti.Economika’ quoted Duzyol as saying.

TANAP construction was complete in 2018 and the first gas supplies to Turkey were commenced in July of that year despite the construction delay because of environmental problems.
