President: The Anniversary of the world’s first city on water

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has extended congratulations to oilmen on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the first offshore oil production in the world. The first fountain flew at Neft Dashlari in Baku on the 7th of November 1949, says the congratulation address of the President.

The work, carried out under wise leadership of the National Leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev to modernize the oil industry field in 1970s, opened the door to exploration and operation of new fields within a short period of time. Regional and global scale energy projects are successfully implemented today under the initiative and leadership of Azerbaijan.

It is noteworthy that ‘Neft Dashlari’ field is located in the south-eastern part of the Absheron peninsula. The depth varies from 10 to 25m. Most of the oil horizons lie at a depth of 60m.

The first oil fountain flew after the first prospecting drilling from the well with a flow rate of 100 tonnes per day (about 712 barrels). Intensive development started in 1952. Commercial oil flew from 6 wells. The depth up to 40m was developed by a pier-based construction.

Total length of piers during the period between 1951 and 1980 increased up to 180km. “Neft Dashlari” is a unique city on water possessing its communication lines, transport, residential infrastructure. Production of light high quality oil specific to Baku oil sort is still ongoing here.
