Results of the exhibition year - 2019

The organisers of international trade fairs in Azerbaijan summed up their activities in 2019. Caspian Event Organisers “CEO” and Iteca Caspian held 21 annual trade exhibitions and 3 conferences. The first Azerbaijani non-oil exhibitions WorldFood Azerbaijan, BakuBuild and Bakutel celebrated their 25th anniversaries with great success, while Caspian Ecology celebrated its 10th anniversary. In addition, Caspian Event Organisers provided organisational support to 12 international events: IOI 2019 – 31st International Olympiad in Informatics, WCO IT/TI Conference and Exhibition, UIA International Forum, Azerbaijan Neurology Week and others.

In 2019, international exhibitions in Baku gathered 1,838 exhibitors from 53 countries, of which 986 were foreign companies. For the first time, Mongolia joined the countries participating in the exhibitions in Azerbaijan. Russia, Turkey, and Belarus were first, second and third in terms of number of companies represented at the exhibitions. At various exhibitions, 21 countries presented 33 national, and 24 regional stands.

In total, 50,537 visitors from 75 countries around the world were registered at the exhibitions. The geographic span of the visitors expanded significantly in 2019, with the top three countries, Turkey, Russia and Iran, retaining their leading positions in visitor numbers.

The country's leadership has paid attention to exhibition activities in the country and this year was no exception. President Ilham Aliyev visited the Caspian Oil and Gas, Caspian Agro, WorldFood Azerbaijan, Bakutel exhibitions, and also sent letters of greeting to participants and visitors. The attention the government pays to exhibitions, and the support of the interested government agencies has a tremendous positive impact, and is the key to success. The visit of the President to the exhibition is always an additional impetus for the development of the industry, a demonstration of the care and attention he pays to the market’s participants.

The President of the United States Donald J. Trump also sent a letter of greetings to the participants and guests of the Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference, and the video message sent the UK Secretary of State for International Trade, Liam Fox. The Secretary General of the World Tourism Organisation Zurab Pololikashvili sent the letters of greeting to the AITF Tourism Exhibition participants. The exhibitions were also popular among foreign branch ministries and international structures. The list of exhibitions guests included Igor Vasilyevich Lyashenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus, Houlin Zhao, the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union, Kent D. Logsdon, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Energy Resources, Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey Mehmet Cahit Turhan, Amir Hossein Zamaniniya, Deputy Minister of Oil of the Islamic Republic of Iran and others.

Exhibitions and Conferences, organized by Iteca Caspian and Caspian Event Organisers are actively supported by state structures. Some of them actively represented their interests at stands at the exhibitions in 2019: Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, SOCAR, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Azerbaijan Republic, Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, State Housing Development Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan State Tourism Agency, Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, IDEA, ABAD, DOST Agency of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Azerbaijan, E-Gov structure of the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Foundation (AZPROMO), the National Confederation of Entrepreneurs (Employers) Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ASK) and Small and Medium Business Development Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan support all scheduled exhibitions.

The Small and Medium Business Development Agency (SMB) organised a stand for small and medium-sized businesses at 6 exhibitions (WorldFood Azerbaijan, Gift, Eduexpo, BakuBuild, Caspian Ecology, Bakutel), thus helping hundreds of small and medium enterprises access the markets. As part of this support, SMB offered their products and services to an audience of thousands, expanding sales opportunities and building new business relationships.

In the success of exhibitions, the role of partners and sponsors is important. In 2019, the partners of the exhibitions were SOCAR, BP, NB Group, Azercell, TPAO, Azeri MI Drilling Fluids, AZFEN, Baku Steel Company, BOS SHELF, Caspian Drilling Company, Сaspian Marine Services, RussNeft, Socar Polymer, Tekfen Construction, Royal IHC, Kapital Bank, Pasha Bank, Equinor Azerbaijan, Gasprombank, Petronas Azerbaijan, INPEX Corporation, ABB Limited, Baker Hughes, Caspian Pipe Coatings, Dentons Europe AARPI, HUAWEI, Lamor Corporation, McDermott, Nobel Upstream, SOCAR AQS, Tenaris Connections B.V., Total E&P Absheron, Zenith Aran Oil Company LTD,  Prior Leasing, Matanat A, AIMC, Holcim Azerbaijan, Mitto, the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, Baku Convention Center, International Bank of Azerbaijan, Shokki  Mokki, Halliburton, ACE Group Consultants, British School in Baku, Green Light Autism Center, лечебно-диагностическийцентр «Shafa», Art Trio, Credo, CityTaxi, CTS Translation, Caspian Energy International Media Group. The partners of the exhibitions in 2019 wereBaku Expo Center, Caspian Freight Services, the tour operator Greenwich Travel Club, Qafqaz Hotels and Resorts, Intourist Hotel and Boulevard Hotel Baku. Child Zone partner was "Bagcam" Network of Kindergartens.

The 2019 exhibition year can rightfully be called the year of “Exhibitions +”, as the organisers planned and carried out 45 additional events. Within each exhibition, a Presentation Zone was created specifically to demonstrate new products and services. One such event is B2B business meetings, which has already become a tradition at the exhibitions. In 2019, more than 300 companies participated in B2B meetings and held 848 international meetings.

The new brand in the CEO’s portfolio, “Bizimkiler”, immediately became popular, and in 2019 a session of the “Bizimkiler” event was held not only at Bakutel, but also at the COG and Medinex exhibitions. The performance of our compatriots who have gained experience abroad invariably aroused interest among visitors to exhibitions.

Within the framework of the exhibitions, new formats and events appeared for the first time, providing additional opportunities for networking: the Chef Championship “Chef’s Cup” was held with the organizational support of the Development of Tourism and National Cuisine Public Union and the website chefs.az; “Trans-Caspian International Transport Route” conference, the “Corporate Social Responsibility - The Green Wave” session, discussion with well-known futurologist from Slovenia, Blaz Golab on topic “Energy-efficient and Smart Cities: Main Drivers and the Role of the Energy Sector in their Development”, “From Waste to Art” exhibition, “Women in Power” session, meeting with the famous children’s writer I.M. Shevchuk, who is one of the authors of the “Smeshariki” project and the author of the script for several episodes of the Fixies project, a panel discussion of Promo Talks, business dialogue with the participation of a special guest of Bakutel - Editorial Director of “Forbes Russia” magazine Nikolai Uskov and director of long-term exhibition partner – “1news” News Agency Rakhman Hajiyev and other events.

Before the start of almost every exhibition the organisers gathered the participants at business breakfasts, which helped the exhibitors get to know each other, get to know the organisers better, and most importantly increase the effectiveness of their participation due to the knowledge and opportunities that they received. Until 2019, the organisers invited specialists from abroad for this type of training, and now companies have grown local specialists who share their experience with local participants

Also, company representatives gathered together at the exhibitions anniversary events, WorldFood Azerbaijan, Bakubuild and Caspian Ecology. The exhibitors planted pomegranate and almond trees in the Central Botanical Garden, installed birdhouses and bird feeders there, and planted cypress trees on the area of Lake Beyukshor, near the Olympic Stadium.

At the Caspian Oil and Gas and Bakutel exhibitions, a special mobile application worked, which allowed participants to be “paperless”, that is, to do without printed documents. In turn, visitors to the exhibitions, having downloaded the application, could be at the “hands free” exhibition, since all the information was already on their phone. Convenient and easy navigation of the application allowed visitors to quickly find the necessary information. In addition, both participants and visitors using push notifications quickly received information about the start of events according to the program of the exhibition and conference. Visitors could make appointments on their own with exhibitors, and also by scanning the QR code, send all the information and contacts of the company they were interested in to their email. Also, an interactive exhibition plan was established at the exhibitions, allowing visitors to lay out an individual route, send the plan to an email, and much more.

The organisers continue the “Save the Nature” campaign, according to which all used paper products from the office are returned for recycling and their reuse. The organisers also refused to use plastic badges and bags at exhibitions, replacing them with paper and bags of recycled paper. A new step will be to reduce the use of banners for advertising purposes, and instead use prints on fabrics. Excess food ordered for exhibition gala dinners will be sent to people in need, and it is also planned to transfer all food waste to animal shelters.

Currently, preparations are underway for the new exhibition season, which will be full of interesting events. In 2020, exhibition operators CEO and Iteca Caspian will conduct 24 projects. The season will open on February 15 with Ferqli Ferdlər: the 2nd Congress for Kids with Special Needs, which will focus on the topic of ASDs, an autism spectrum disorder, and bring together parents of children with special needs, and specialists, teachers, methodologists, psychologists and psychotherapists.

The full schedule of exhibitions, which to be held in 2020 can be found on the official websites of www.iteca.az and www.ceo.az

TAP enters into final phase

According to the TAP consortium, the completeness percentage of the Trans Adriatic gas pipeline makes 90.7% at the end of the year. Every day hundreds of meters of TAP’s Right of Way (ROW) are cleared, strung, welded, lowered into the trenches and backfilled, in line with the project construction steps and schedule.

As Reuters has reported earlier, citing the Head of the TANAP consortium Saltuk Duzyol, due to the delay in construction of the Italian section of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), gas from the Azerbaijani field Shah Deniz will reach Europe no earlier than October 2020. A 1,850km long TANAP is designed for supplying Azerbaijani gas from ‘Shah Deniz II’ field to Turkey via Georgia. TANAP will be linked to TAP on the Greek border, which will make it possible to deliver Azerbaijani gas to Europe. According to Duzyol, “the project was supposed to be completed early in 2020. However, the TAP consortium faced some technical challenges, as well as other non-technical problems which impacted the construction process”, Duzyol said.

If the pipeline is not commissioned by July 1, 2020, the TANAP consortium has a right to lodge financial claims on Azerbaijan. “From the trade point of view, we have the right to issue invoices starting from July 1, 2020”, “Vesti.Ekonomika” quotes Duzyol as saying.

Construction of TANAP was complete in 2018. The first gas supply to Turkey began in July of the same year despite the delay in construction because of environmental problems.

It is noteworthy that TAP worth 4.5 billion EUR is a part of the Southern Gas Corridor project.

Initial capacity of TAP will make 10 bcm per year with the possibility of its doubling.

The length of the pipeline makes 878km.  Of this, 550km, 215km, 105km, 8km will cross over Greece, Albania, Adriatic seabed and via the territory of Italy respectively.

TAP shareholders are as follows: BP – 20 %, SOCAR – 20 %, Snam – 20 %, Fluxys – 19 %, Enagás – 16 %, Axpo – %.

AZAL to open its sky to all airlines

27 December 2019, Baku – For the first time in the history of Azerbaijan's civil aviation, the so-called fifth and seventh freedoms of the air will start operating at all international airports of the country.

From January 1, 2020, these degrees of freedom will enable flights from Azerbaijani airports to 40 countries in Europe, North America, Australia and South-East Asia.

Freedoms of the air is a set of commercial aviation rights granting a country’s airline(s) the privilege of entering and landing in another country’s airspace. The higher the degree of freedom, the more actions foreign aircraft are allowed to perform in Azerbaijani airspace.

Thus, the fifth freedoms of the air allows foreign airlines to perform flights from their airport to other cities with stopovers in Baku (or any other airport in Azerbaijan) for boarding/disembarking of passengers. For example, under the fifth degree of freedom, European air carriers will be able to operate a Paris-Tokyo flight with a stopover in Baku (or any other airport in the country). Or Japanese airlines can perform flights to EU countries with landing at one of the international airports of Azerbaijan.

The seventh degree of freedom enables the air carrier to fly between Azerbaijan and foreign countries, bypassing the intermediate landing at the home airport. For example, a European airline can fly to Azerbaijan from Dubai and then fly to one of the U.S. cities without landing in their home country.

In both cases, the airlines will carry out free commercial activity in all directions, including Azerbaijan.

It should be noted that previously permissions to perform such flights in Azerbaijan were granted to airlines individually.

Under the new conditions, all foreign airlines, willing to operate flights to Azerbaijan in the future will have the same rights as the national air carrier.

This will increase foreign airlines’ interest to perform flights to Azerbaijan, open up new markets for them, and allow them to boost their passenger traffic and enhance the attractiveness for tourists.

The arrival of foreign airlines will also create more travel opportunities for Azerbaijani citizens, as they will have a wide choice of direct flights to near and far abroad.

From 1 January 2020, all airlines that wish to fly to 40 countries in Europe, North America, Australia and South-East Asia will have this advantage. The relevant notification will be sent to the aviation authorities of these countries.

The air carriers will be able to deliver passengers from Baku to France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Estonia, Ireland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Bulgaria, Georgia, USA, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, South Korea, Malaysia and Australia without any restrictions. In the future, the list of states may be expanded.

Moreover, any new airline that wants to start flying to Azerbaijan will receive a 100% discount on the airports’ services. In the second year of operation the discount will be 70%, in the third - 50%, in the fourth - 30%. The implementation period and discount rate are to be extended, if the airline increases number of flights and passenger traffic. More detailed information about this can be found on the official website of the airport - airport.az.

“It is a global decision for the country as a whole. Thanks to President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev’s constant care and attention to Azerbaijan’s civil aviation, all conditions have been created at the country’s international airports for providing services to a large number of foreign airlines. Introduction of the fifth freedoms of air at all international airports of the country will make it possible to expand the geography of flights from Azerbaijan, increase the country's transport accessibility in the foreign market, as well as to realize the country's tourism potential and provide competitive offers for passengers. Our citizens will have an opportunity to expand the geography of their travels and reduce travel costs to Europe, Asia, Australia and North America," – noted AZAL President Jahangir Asgarov.

The decision to implement fifth and seventh freedoms of air at Azerbaijani international airports will also give further impetus to the development of the non-oil sector and help open up new jobs in the country.

Currently, there are six airports with international status in Azerbaijan. Besides the Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, all conditions have been created for air carriers at the airports of Nakhchivan , Ganja, Gabala, Lankaran and Zagatala.

All international airports of the Republic have ICAO category up to the third one, are supplied with modern equipment, necessary conditions have been created here for ground service, aviation security service, border and customs control.

Note that Heydar Aliyev International Airport is the largest airport in Azerbaijan and the region in terms of passenger and freight traffic, takeoff and landing operations, the airport terminal area and capacity of the cargo complex. Baku airport was awarded the maximum rating of "5 Stars" according to Skytrax World Airport Awards and also named the best airport among airports of CIS countries for the level of the provided services for the three years in a row.

In November 2019, 30 passenger airlines operated flights to more than 60 different destinations from Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

Azerbaijan airports hold the leader position in the region in terms of passenger traffic. In the first 11 months of 2019, Azerbaijan's international airports served a total of 5.15 million passengers, of which 4.39 million were served by Heydar Aliyev International Airport. This is 6% more than the same figure last year.

Minister of Energy of the Azerbaijan Republic attends the 5th summit and ministerial meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Malabo, the capital of the Equatorial Guinea.

Minister of Energy has conveyed greetings of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic on the occasion of the 5th summit.

Addressing the summit, the minister spoke about trends on the global gas market and about gas export projects ongoing in Azerbaijan. The minister noted that the demand, which has been growing in recent years for natural gas as for a low carbon energy source, helped to implement new projects and accelerated diversification of sources and routes, meanwhile ensuring gas industry development. The minister also touched the expected shift to such renewable sources as biogas, biomethane and hydrogen.

Minister Parviz Shakhbazov also spoke about projects of Azerbaijani importers of energy resources, which help them to become gas exporters and promote energy security. Referring to regional and global significance of the final project of the Southern Gas Corridor, he said: “TANAP which plays an important role in development of the Southern Gas Corridor is ready to deliver natural gas to Europe. Natural gas will be supplied from the Caspian to Europe via the Southern Gas Corridor in the second half of 2020. Reconstruction of the energy map of the world by another global project of the country which has no access to the sea is the result of the consecutive and long-term energy policy implemented by President Ilham Aliyev. This policy is based on interests of all parties and creation of the mutually beneficial environment for global cooperation”.

Participating in the summit were Secretary General of GECF Yuri Senturin, Secretary General of OPEC Mohammed Barkindo, Russia’s Minister of Energy Alexander Novak and Minister of Mineral Resources and Petroleum of Egypt Tarek El-Molla.
