President of Moldova Igor Dodon arriving in Baku

President of Moldova Igor Dodon will pay an official visit to Baku tonight.

Today the President of Moldova will meet with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and also have meetings with Milli Majis Speaker Ogtay Asadov and Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Artur Rasizadeh. On the second day Igor Dodon is expected to visit the Carpet Museum and take part in the opening of Formula 1, the diplomatic sources told Caspian Energy News.

“Moldova is interested in fostering the trade and cultural ties with Azerbaijan”, President of Moldova Igor Dodon said on the eve of his official visit to Baku on June 21-23, Caspian Energy News ( reports with reference to

“Our countries have reached a good level of political dialogue, trade and economic cooperation, cultural and humanitarian ties, and cooperation within international organizations. I believe our joint efforts will enable us to enjoy new tangible results in promoting constructive and useful cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, both at the bilateral and multilateral levels”, the President of Moldova said.

According to Igor Dodon, although last year the bilateral trade between the two countries grew by 39%, it is small and now stands at about $5 million. “The trade turnover is still small and does not fully reflect the potential for cooperation between our states. Joint efforts are needed to increase it”, President Dodon emphasized. He recalled that the cooperation between the two countries has a huge potential. In Moldova there are 111 registered enterprises with the Azerbaijani capital, investment projects are being implemented with participation of economic entities of the two countries.

President Dodon expressed the opinion that the free trade regime, which is currently in force between Moldova and the EU, offers additional opportunities to attract investments from Azerbaijani companies into processing of feedstock and production of goods for export to the markets of European countries. Chisinau is interested in fostering the cooperation in the energy sector, including with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, participation of Azerbaijani companies in tenders for privatization of state property in Moldova.

Igor Dodon expressed hope that the visit of Prime Minister of Moldova Pavel Filip to Baku, as well as hosting the fourth meeting of the Moldova-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation and Business Forum, will boost the cooperation in the field of economy.

“Unfortunately, the last meeting of the commission was in April 2012”, Dodon said.

According to him, Chisinau is looking forward the visit of Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov and this visit was preceded by consultations of representatives of the foreign ministries of the two countries at various international venues. According to the President of Moldova, cooperation at the inter-ministerial and inter-parliamentary levels through the Moldovan-Azerbaijani Parliamentary Friendship Groups can contribute to the development of the relations, as well as the upcoming visit of the Azerbaijani businessmen to Chisinau, who will be able to assess possibilities for promotion of the bilateral economic cooperation.
